United Policyholders Honors William M. Shernoff
July 22, 2016 – Los Angeles, CA – The United Policyholders’ Board of Directors announced that it would honor William M. Shernoff as part of its 25 year anniversary for the work he’s done on behalf of policyholders throughout the country at an event in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday, July 24.
Known as the “Dean” of insurance bad faith, Mr. Shernoff helped found UP 25 years ago and has been fighting on behalf of insurance consumers for over 40 years. He is the founding partner of Shernoff Bidart Echeverria LLP, a law firm specializing in insurance bad faith litigation. A longtime consumer advocate, Mr. Shernoff made a career of representing insurance consumers in their cases against insurance companies. In 1979, he persuaded the California Supreme Court to establish new case law that permits plaintiffs to sue insurance companies for bad faith seeking both compensatory and punitive damages when they unreasonably handle a policyholder’s claim (Egan v. Mutual of Omaha). Mr. Shernoff has successfully represented individuals, businesses and even entire countries in insurance bad faith cases.
As part of the recognition, the organization established the William Shernoff UP Fund to help benefit, strengthen and defend policyholders’ rights throughout the country.
