Disability case against Met Life resolved
SBE attorney Howard Shernoff resolved the case of a New York woman who had her disability benefits cut off by her insurer, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Shernoff’s client suffered from Major Depressive Disorder and was unable to hold onto her position as CFO at a large private company.
The lawsuit alleged that MetLife stopped paying the benefits in bad faith and relied on a biased medical examiner to challenge the woman’s condition. In Shernoff’s view, although settlement of the case brought great relief to his client, the practice of terminating insureds’ disability benefits based on so-called independent medical examinations will continue because it enables insurers to save millions of dollars on claims.
